Tirolensis Ars Vini

The “Tatzelwurm“, a seal of quality

In 1994, six of South Tyrol’s most ambitious wine producers banded together as Tirolensis Ars Vini – Quality Vintners of South Tyrol with the common purpose of indulging in the art of winemaking. Since then these wineries, nearly all of which exclusively produce estate wines sourced from their own vineyards between Meran and Bozen, have all earned recognition as distinguished producers of premium wines. They are confident vintners with similar perspectives and a shared dedication to quality, which demands attention to detail from the vine to the bottle, and is always evident in the final product. Several times a year, a panel of impartial specialists is assembled for blind tastings in order to identify the wines of outstanding quality. These wines are awarded the distinction of the “Tatzelwurm” seal in recognition of their excellence.

The Tatzelwurm

The Tirolensis Ars Vini seal is a legendary creature from the sagas of the Alps, which makes its home in sunny vineyards where it feeds on sweet grapes. The Tatzelwurm (or “Clawed Worm”) signifies not only membership in South Tyrol’s only association of premium wine producers, but also their common values of self-sufficiency, persistence, and willingness to change.

Tirolensis Ars Vini-winefest

As individualists, the TAV vintners share their experience in both the vineyard and the cellar amongst each other, develop further common marketing strategies, and present their wines together at wine fairs and national tastings. Each May, the TAV celebrates at a different member’s winery, where in addition to the new vintage, all sorts of rarities from the cellar as well as local specialities from the kitchen are offered.

The following wineries are members of Tirolensis Ars Vini:

  • Griesbauerhof
  • Tenuta Kränzel
  • Podere Provinciale Cantina Laimburg
  • Loacker Schwarhof
  • Maso Unterganzner
  • Tenuta Thurnhof

Cuvée TAV Dolomiten Weinberg IGT

In 2000, the members of the TAV premiered its Tirolensis Vino Rosso, a specially blended cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon, Lagrein and Pinot Nero. In 2006, the selection was further enhanced with the addition of the cuvée Tirolensis Vino Bianco, created from select white Burgundy, Sauvignon and Gewürztraminer. The source wines, direct from the cellars of the members’ vineyards, were expertly blended to breathe life into a distinctive speciality unique to the region of South Tyrol.
